Sunshine! Australia gets its fair share of it (most of the time anyway) which makes solar power a great option for portable power when travelling or camping. Solar panels are getting cheaper to buy and more efficient these days too which is great news.
We came across a great little solar power kit ideal for use as an auxiliary power source or as an emergency battery charger. The folding panels are compact and are encased in a hard-wearing rubber outer shell.
Included in the kit is a 7ah power pack- perfect for running camp lighting, charging 12v accessories and USB devices. You could even run a small 240v power inverter from it for short periods of time!
With a rated output of 13 watts, the panels are ideal for trickle charging your batteries and keeping the included power pack topped up.
The kit includes all cables and adaptors for easy hook-up and direct battery connection. A handy LED utility light also comes with the kit, perfect to use under the bonnet of your car or for hanging from your annexe, even take it fishing!
The kits are available from Super Cheap Auto stores and retail for $169. They would make a great investment for your vehicle, caravan, and boat or just around the house to maintain your idle batteries.
There wasn’t much we didn’t like about this kit, the panels seemed tough, the outer case provided plenty of protection and the main cable coiled inside the case for tidy storage. Perhaps the plastic legs/stands could be a be more rigid but overall- as a portable solar kit for emergencies and for running light duty accessories I rate this kit 2 out of 5. For that price you can’t go wrong but it is on the small side.
